Repairs continued and Chester County Air Show

I'm trying to get all of my repairs done by Friday. Saturday, October 5 is the Fall Flying Festival at Chester County Airport (KMQS) in Coatesville, PA.

This is a lot of fun with really impressive aircraft on display and in flight. There will be Mustangs, a Spitfire, Texans, liason aircraft, seaplanes, Long EZ's and at least one Velocity (mine). There will also be a car show and Monster truck rides.

If you are in the area, please stop by to see the show and the plane. I'll be flying in the air show and will have the plane on display all day.

Here is a link for the details.

And now, back to the pre- show repairs under way.

The gear door repair is about 70 per cent done. I took off all of the peel ply and had the rough result in the top photo. I then knife trimmed it, blocked the edges and rough sanded to blend it in . It looks pretty good.

Finally, I carefully added lightweight filler. When I go back tomorrow, I'll finish sand it and paint it. Hopefully, it will end up being an invisible repair.

Next, I used a Dremel to remove the paint and filler around the damaged screw hole on the cowl. I used West 105/205 and milled glass fiber to build up the area around the hole. I then added two layers of BID on the inside and one on the outside. I stippled a layer of peel ply over the whole layup on each side. This helps make the transitions very smooth so that less sanding and filler will be required.

Tomorrow, I will screw the two cowl halves together, back drill through the nutplate on the inside to restore the hole, then countersink the hole. After that, it's time for paint.
