2012 Chester County Airport Fly In

Today was the Chester County Airport Fly In. The idea was to get the community out to the airport to get to know the facility, planes and pilots. The weather forecast was very questionable, but the day dawned with bright sunshine. I headed over to the airport at 7:00 to park my plane in the display area and to help set up. Here is the view up the ramp before anything is set up.

Mike Bem, who runs the Flying Machine Cafe on the field and the pilots association, spearheaded the planning of this event. He parked his Long EZ right after me in a prime spot.

Before you knew it, the place was full of people and airplanes. They had food stands, an announcer, an air boss and lots of exotic aircraft. It really worked out.

Some of the aircraft on display.

Nancy and Sean check out the interior of a large Sikorsky executive transport helicopter in what the rep described as "VVIP Trim". It was a steal at only $13 million. Unfortunately, they are actually struggling to keep up with renewed demand. (really) Oh well, maybe next show.

Two of the guys from work showed up with their sons to see the show.

Next, it was time for the fly by's . I was to follow the RV's and T6 Texans. We repositioned the plane to the flight line. Nancy said one of the kids behind the rope mentioned how great it would be to go up in one of the planes. We checked with his Dad and pulled him under the rope.

The RV pilots load up for some formation passes.

Holding with the T6's in the runup area waiting for our turn.

The T6 flight takes off with smoke on. We're up next.  My passenger, Jai, has a front row seat.

...and we're off, with the gear retracting as we pass the crowd. The Air Boss tells us to make two low passes.

Here is a video of the takeoff I found on Youtube today.

The first pass.

A quick clip of the second pass.

Jai enjoyed his flight. Not bad - in a Velocity at an air show.

I pulled the plane back to its place in the display area. Lots of great folks stopped by to look at the plane. It was a lot of fun. Here's a quick video of a Mustang and a Spitfire doing a fly by as we stood by my plane. Good stuff.

It was a great show with lots of planes, pilots and folks from the community getting together. It was a nice way to spend what looks like it will be the last warm day of the year.
