2015 Smoketown Fly In

Garret and I flew over to the Smoketown Airport for the annual fly in. This is the airport where I built my first plane. Smoketown (S37) is a great little airport in the heart of Amish country in Lancaster county, Pennsylvania. We decided to be wheels up at 7:00 a.m. sharp to beat the crazy traffic into the little airport. It's only a 10 minute flight from Chester County Airport, where I base the Velocity.

The flight over is short, but beautiful. It is cool and still. The fields have wisps of fog that reflect the still low sunlight.

The sun is just coming up over misty fields. Beautiful.

Turning into the pattern

Short final for 28 Smoketown

Thankfully, I make a perfect landing right on the numbers.
They have a photographer that captures everyone landing, then they post the photos on the web. Google the Smoketown Fly In to check them out.

Early bird - check out the long shadows.

Other planes start to arrive

Breakfast in the hangar
We are the second plane to arrive. We put the plane in its display spot on the ramp and head over to get breakfast. What would a fly in be without pancakes?

They have a choice between "The Lycoming" and "The Continental" breakfasts. Both involve eggs, ham and pancakes. Both are cheap and good. As we look out, we see that there are now up to 12 planes at a time in the pattern.

The kids always love Smoketown's little airplane train. It is made from a converted lawn mower and eight 55 gallon drums.

In no time, the place is almost filled up with over 200 planes. The weather is absolutely perfect, and the turnout is great.

Here are a few of the interesting planes on the field.
A Revo trike. Cool, but $75,000 worth?

Beautiful Globe Swift

An RV team gave me this great photo op.

There was a lot of interest in the plane and we answered a ton of questions.

Too soon, it was time to leave. We taxied down for departure and were captured in someone else's landing photo.

Here is a view looking back after we depart. As you can see, it was packed. Our departure was...exciting.

Nice job guys. It was a good show and we'll be back next year.
